What is a tachograph: instructions for use
Drivers who are going to work on trucks or passenger buses should not only familiarize themselves with the special driving rules. They have to study the operation of the Tachograph.
This is a device installed on a heavy vehicle that automatically records its speed, distance, and driving time, as well as driver actions selected from one of the possible modes.

They are determined automatically when the car is in motion. When the vehicle stops, the Tachograph switches to another mode. If you are not satisfied with the automatic selection, you can manually create periods for rest and sleep.
The purpose of the Tachograph is to prevent driver fatigue and ensure fair competition and road safety. They are used to ensure that drivers and employers comply with working time rules.
How it is arranged
The on-board recorder has a fairly simple design. There is a main unit installed on the front panel in the car, in easy access to the driver. If we take modern cars, then Tachographs with a large screen are already installed there, where information about the operation of the system appears.
To receive power, the Tachograph is connected to the vehicle’s on-board network.

In stand-alone mode, it can also record. Special attention should be paid to the memory module, which is independent of energy supply. No matter what conditions the driver is in, all actions are saved in the device’s memory.
To receive information about the movement of a truck or bus on the device, you need to connect a speed sensor. Developers are constantly working to improve the Tachograph, so there are already those that have personalization of access. To get to the information, you need to install a driver card.
When a tachograph is required
The device is mandatory for installation on new vehicles weighing more than three and a half tons, if they are intended for the carriage of goods, or on new vehicles carrying more than nine passengers, including the driver.

Types
There are analog and digital Tachographs. All commercial vehicles first registered on or after May 1, 2006, must be equipped with digital devices. This obligation is due to the fact that it is easier to read information from modern media, which is stored longer on smart cards.

Since June 15, 2019, newly registered trucks and buses have been equipped with new generation Tachographs, the so-called intelligent ones. They have the same functions as digital devices, but there is also an innovation in them:
- supplemented with communication facilities, such as GPS location;
- transmission of information in real time to law enforcement agencies via a short-range communication channel;
- includes advanced protection against unauthorized access, such as encryption keys created using the most advanced algorithms.
Drivers who often travel on unfamiliar roads in different countries feel as protected as possible with a new generation Tachograph.
How it works
Digital Tachographs can record and store driver actions in an accurate and secure manner through the introduction of advanced technologies and robust protection against unauthorized access. Before starting to drive, the driver must insert a personal microchip card into the Tachograph. This personal item stores the driver’s driving data for at least 28 days and ensures that the information can be easily obtained by inspection authorities.

The system consists of a unit that is attached to the gearbox of the car, there is also a storage medium and a head (analog or digital type). There is a special rule for cars that travel to EU countries. If they were released after May 2006, then. digital Tachograph heads must be present in them. If an analog device is operating, then a paper disk is used for them. For digital, internal memory and a driver, flash memory cards are applicable.
Rules in force in different countries
Knowing that many drivers and their employers do not comply with certain rules, it was decided at the legislative level to record the schedule. Such strict rules are necessary to reduce the number of accidents on the roads and avoid accidents. When the Tachograph is working, you can clearly mark the time of rest and travel.

Drivers and their employers are legally obliged to accurately record their activities, keep records and provide them upon request to the transport authorities, who are responsible for compliance with the rules.
Remote download of tachograph data
The ability to download information without having to physically go to the vehicle. This saves time and money, and reduces the risk of fines.
In accordance with a recent amendment, a new version of the intelligent Tachograph will be deployed in 2023. It will be able to include new functions with the aim of ensuring compliance with EU legislation on cabotage, and the posting of workers, for example, recording border crossings or determining the location of the vehicle when performing a loading-unloading operation.

Additional information related to the driver’s activity is transmitted to law enforcement agencies via a short-range communication channel.
The intelligent Tachograph version 2 will increase resistance to hacking due to new features, such as its ability to authenticate satellite signals or the installation of an internal sensor independent of the external motion fixator.
The intelligent Tachograph will be installed on newly registered vehicles from August 2023 and on already driven vehicles participating in international road transport by August 2025. In addition, from July 1, 2026, vehicles over 2.4 tons will be required to have built-in modules.
The requirements for the recorder may be different. They are installed according to the brand of the vehicle, where it travels, etc.:
- For buses and trucks that travel on international routes, there is a rule requiring the installation of the European Agreement Model for Vehicles.
- The device with the Cryptographic Information Protection Module/Navigation Cryptographic Module (navigation cryptographic protection) is mainly used on machines that are used in our country.
- Navigation Cryptographic Module unit. It is a serious data protection that is systematically implemented in the on-board recorder. This device is good because it has its own accelerometer, memory module, receiver, and chronometer.
This is the most reliable unit, which continues to work even when there is no electricity supply. There is a backup battery for this. A Cryptographic Information Protection Module was created and implemented in order to not only collect information on the flight, but also to encrypt it, and then store it. This happens from the sensor to the module. Information enters the microprocessor, where it is processed and encrypted. Then, in this form, it is stored in the device’s memory. It will not be possible to simply change the information. A special key is used to open access.
It must be remembered that the module has time limits. The installed element is activated when the device starts to be used. Next, a period of three years is set, when it is necessary to replace the unit at least once. At the same time, a new module is activated.
Who needs a Tachograph
In fact, a recorder can be installed in any vehicle. If we take legal circumstances, then a number of vehicles fall under obligations here. It is considered optional for trucks that are used for personal purposes to install a Tachograph. It is necessary when the driver decides to take his vehicle for work or gets a job as a long-distance driver on a truck.

It also happens that only sometimes the car is used for commercial purposes, and the rest of the time the transport is needed for minor tasks. In this case, it is recommended to install a recorder that supports the “OUT” function. In this case, activation is carried out at the moment when the car is not working, but is going to the workshop or is being driven empty. This function cannot be used for buses and trucks operating in the commercial direction.
According to the law, the Tachograph is installed on:
- minibuses and buses, where there are more than eight seats;
- buses for transporting people in suburban and intra-city routes;
- trucks weighing 3.5 tons;
- cars carrying goods of increased danger;
- dump trucks;
- cranes.
There is transport that does not need a Tachograph. Military equipment and that belonging to law enforcement agencies fell here. Construction and communication equipment also do not need a recorder.
How is the inspection carried out
Drivers who want to ensure a safe and easy road for themselves must understand that the Tachograph must not only be installed, but also work. Often, traffic police officers conduct inspections. During it, a law enforcement officer must make sure that the car has a Tachograph that meets the established standards. In addition, it must be with seals. Any interventions are carried out only at the legal level.

Check:
- driving and rest intervals;
- compliance with the deadlines for checking the Tachograph;
- preservation of requirements for the use of personal cards.
Recorders are not installed independently on board the car. For this, special service centers work, which have permission for this. To properly mount the device, specialists calculate the location. It should be selected in such a way that the driver can use the Tachograph and not be distracted from driving the car. Sometimes for this it is necessary to introduce brackets and shelves into the panel. After installation, you can connect the Tachograph to the on-board network and to the speed sensor. Insulation is necessarily checked so that there is no short circuit on the road.
At the end of the installation, the device and the cryptographic module are activated. Then it is calibrated so that there is high accuracy in data collection. To do everything according to the law, it is necessary to seal the case. This is a kind of protection against illegal interference in the operation of the Tachograph. The data cannot be edited and changed.
Tachograph card
Most often, a personal driver card is used, which is issued in the name of a long-distance driver who constantly makes flights in this truck or bus. This convention is necessary in order to initiate the identity that was at a certain time in some place. Know that if you get behind a large transport without a personal card or use someone else’s electronic key, your actions are considered illegal. If you are stopped by traffic police officers, you may be fined.

For beginners, working with a Tachograph may seem like a difficult task, but with our driving school at Marka, difficulties will not arise. Teachers will conduct several lessons in Russian, where they will clearly explain the principle of operation of the recorder. In addition, students will have the opportunity to practice independently and gain skills in managing data on the Tachograph.
