What is Code 95 and who needs it in Poland?

Code 95 is an entry in driving licenses of categories C, C+E, D, or D+E, confirming the completion of initial qualification or periodic training. It is mandatory for all drivers performing commercial freight or passenger transport within the European Union.

Legal basis: EU Directive 2003/59/WE, implemented in Polish law through Ustawa o transporcie drogowym.

You need Code 95 if:

You work as a hired truck driver (category C or C+E)

You perform international or domestic commercial transport

You want to legally work as a driver in Poland or any EU country

Without a valid Code 95, the employer is not allowed to permit you to drive, and road control (ITD / Inspekcja Transportu Drogowego) can issue a fine to both the driver and the carrier.

How is the Code 95 exam structured in Poland?

The state exam consists of two parts:

The exam consists of 2 blocks:
  • Block 1: 20 questions. 4 errors allowed.
  • Block 2: 10 questions. 5 errors allowed.
  • The exam can be retaken an unlimited number of times.

Driving and rest times (EU Regulation 561/2006)

One of the most extensive sections. Questions about daily and weekly driving limits, reduced rest, mandatory breaks after 4.5 hours of continuous driving. This must be known by heart.

Financial requirements for carriers (EU Regulation 1071/2009)

Minimum own capital: €9,000 for the first vehicle and €5,000 for each subsequent one. This question regularly appears on the exam.

Signs and symbols on vehicles

For example: the penguin symbol on packaging means frozen goods can be stored – not chilled or just cold. Such details are often confused on the exam.

Mandatory vehicle equipment

In mountainous areas in winter, a truck driver must have snow chains, a first-aid kit, and an alcohol tester. Questions on this topic appear in a multiple-correct-answer format.

Your rights as a driver

For example: having two driver cards simultaneously is prohibited. Replacing a lost card, the procedure for obtaining it, rights during inspections – all this is included in the test.

Permissible number of cabotage operations, necessary documents, driver's rights abroad.

Questions are divided into blocks of 10. Each question contains:

    • Tip:

    Do not memorize answers mechanically – read the explanations. On the exam, the wording of the question may be slightly changed, so it is important to understand the essence, not just remember the letter of the answer.

Common errors
on the Code 95 exam

Based on our students’ experience, most errors occur in the following topics:

Double driving – many confuse the norm for one driver with that for two drivers in the cabin. The total extended daily driving duration for both drivers cannot exceed 20 hours.

Questions with multiple correct answers – drivers often choose only one option when there are two or three correct ones.

Financial thresholds – confusion between €6,000 / €7,000 / €9,000 for different situations.

Symbols and markings – signs on product packaging and vehicles require precise knowledge, without guesswork.
